18th NATIONAL CONGRESS AND 32nd ANNIVERSARY

The BSK celebrated its 32nd Anniversary and held its 18th National Congress on February 28, 2009, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the San Juan Gymnasium, San Juan City. The theme for this year’s Congress is “Magbalikatan para sa Kalikasan, Iligtas ang Kinabukasan.”

The whole day event started with a Thanksgiving Mass with Fr. Rupert Merencilla, BSK Spiritual Director as celebrant and Ms. Boots Anson Roa as lector. The Opening Program started immediately after the Mass with San Juan National High School leading the Entrance of Colors and the singing of the Philippine National Anthem. Ms. Rosario “Charo” Yu, Trustee-at-Large led the Pledge of Allegiance followed by a brief Opening Remarks of Ms. Minerva De Leon, Executive Vice-President. Ms. De Leon expressed her gratitude to all BSK members who attended the Congress, especially those who came from far flung areas.

Guests and delegates were presented by Ms. Norma Lozano, BSK Corporate Secretary followed by a brief greeting by Dr. Amelou Benitez Reyes, President of the National Council of Women of the Philippines (NCWP). Dr. Reyes discussed the historical background of BSK as the implementing arm of the National Commission on the Role of Filipino Women (NCRFW). She recalled how BSK survived the crisis when it severed its umbilical cord with NCRFW.

The presentation of Dr. Reyes was followed by the President’s Report of Ms. Guia Gomez which consists of achievements of BSK for the past two years. The report includes Entre-Pinoy initiatives, entrepreneurship counseling and mentoring, capacity building, product development, market linkages and showroom of dolls, angels and other BSK products.

The presentation of President’s Report was followed by the Launching of the Save our Future (SOF) Project. The SOF Project involves an advocacy and massive information, education, and communications (IEC) campaign on solid waste management at the national and local levels though generating youth and children’s commitment as advocates. In order to mobilizing the youth for the project, the SOF mascots were created to render production numbers. The mascots consist of Super Rycle, Dina, Bugart and Lolo. The mascots rendered their 20-minute presentation number after they were introduced by Ms. Gomez.

The highlight of the event is the awarding of SOF Hero to Dr. Helena Z. Benitez, Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Philippine Women’s University and Adviser of the BSK National Foundation. As the former Chair of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), Dr. Benitez was given the SOF Hero Award for her outstanding contributions in promoting environment and sustainable development at the global level. Dr. Benitez was introduced by Dr. Angelita Ago, Immediate Past President of BSK. Dr. Benitez was serenaded by The Angelos, the singing tenor group who is currently in U.S. for a series of concert.

Dr. Benitez expressed her appreciation to BSK for giving her the honor as SOF Hero. She said she is happy to meet young people who are doing well in their respective fields. She suggested that the older leaders of BSK should already start developing new leaders to give them the chance to prove themselves. She said that the secret of her staying healthy at 95 is helping other people. Dr. Benitez was applauded for her very inspiring message.

After the awarding ceremony, Ms. Boots Anson Roa, BSK Treasurer introduced the Keynote Speaker to discuss the theme of the Congress in his capacity as the President of the Foundation for Philippine Environment (FPE). Mr. Edicio De La Torre, FPE President discussed the importance of promoting solid waste management during the present crisis. He applauded BSK for its initiatives to address the critical environment issue. He said that he can work out a partnership between BSK and FPE in relation to solid waste management initiatives. He ended his speech by acknowledging BSK leaders headed by Ms. Gomez for giving him the opportunity to speak at the BSK Congress.

Dr. Ramona Bustamante RaƱeses, BSK Vice-President for Luzon ended the morning session with a group pictorial. A lunch for all delegates was provided to all participants by BSK National through the support of sponsors and benefactors.

Skills Training on Perfume and Liquid Soap were conducted after lunch with Ms. Josephine “Olive” Parilla, the Informal Sector Representative of the National Anti-Poverty Commission (NAPC) as trainor.

Simultaneously with the training, the presidents of BSK Councils and Chapters and their official representatives had a separate meeting held at the Jolibee N. Domingo Branch, San Juan City. The meeting serves as the venue for discussing organizational thrusts and direction for the next biennium. The Body agreed to focus in implementing Entre-Pinoy, Alternative Network of Industries (ANI), Environment and Sustainable Development and Moral Regeneration Programs. Ms. Gomez also encouraged the BSK councils and chapters to display their products at the BSK Productivity Center so that they can be included in the BSK website.

Ms. Gomez expressed its appreciation to BSK leaders who continued to operate their own programs and projects through tapping their networks and initiating their own fund raising activities.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:30 p.m.

The afternoon session started at 2:30 p.m. with Save our Future Group Competition. There were six (6) entries to the competition representing BSK councils in Sinait, Ilocos Sur, Tagig, Quezon City, Taytay and San Juan. The Board of Judges were Mr. Doy Toledo and Ms. Ma. Teresa Aguilar, Ms. Chitniz Dy, Mr. Rod Custodio and Mr. Don Cuden.

Winners of the competition are: first prize – Sinait Chapter, Ilocos Sur, second prize – Tagig Council, and third prize - Taytay Chapter. The Sinait Chapter also won the Biggest Delegation and Early Registrant Award. Special award was given to Anklung Manunugtog of Makati BSK for their outstanding special number during lunch break.

The Congress ended with a Raffle Draw. Masters of Ceremonies during the afternoon program were: Miss Michelle Bautista and Mr. Alex Flores.
